You have to love a film that win’s the Golden Lion award for best picture at the Venice festival and was also condemned by the Catholic Church. Based on a true story, the film takes place in the 1960’s at one of the many Roman Catholic “Magdalene laundries” in Ireland. The film follows three of the over thirty thousand women who were sentenced for indefinite periods of time and subject to prison like conditions. In this case the three women were sent for being raped, being a single mother, and being attractive to boys. I feel the acting in this film really excelled. Although the story was good I found the scenes redundant. There was always an innocent starving girl talking about escaping and then the nuns punishing with humiliation and the cane. All the while the head nun is counting her money and no signs of guilt as to what is going on.
