sky like broken clock

I was looking forward to hearing this CD as Phelps’ past three CDs have earned him a reputation for being one of the best living slide guitarists in the world. Praised by the likes of Steve Earle, Bill Frisell, and U2’s The Edge, Kelly Joe has made a few changes for his fourth release. Instead of using his slide guitar, he decided to use his fingerpicking talents on the guitar. Produced by Ryko Disc president George Howard with the addition of string bass (Larry Taylor), drums (Billy Conway). I think this will certainly be Kelly Joe Phelps’ bestseller to date. Recorded in a live setting with no overdubs, this CD has a beautiful clean sound that is evident throughout the ten songs on this wonderful album. “There was no rehearsal at all,” says Phelps. Besides his guitar skills, I should also add that Kelly Joe has a very smoky sounding voice and sounds extraordinarily similar to Bob Dylan unique voice.
